Our Academics

General Curriculum

The Students at St. Bartholomew Catholic School are offered a well-balanced curriculum which includes Religion, Math, Reading, English, Science and Social Studies.

St. Bartholomew Catholic School follows the academic standards set forth by the Archdiocese of Miami.

Campus Ministry

St. Bartholomew Catholic School provides a religious education curriculum in accord with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  Archdiocesan policy determines the religious education curriculum and appropriate curriculum materials.

We believe that all education must lead to the development of a mature and personal relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Emphasis is placed on instruction in the classroom, a common prayer life, participation in Mass and the sacraments and community service.

Our curriculum requires our students to fulfill Community Service Learning Projects. These projects may include participating with and supporting our local Parish groups such as St. Vincent DePaul Society, Council of Catholic Women, Knights of Columbus, etc.

The program includes, but is not limited, to the following:

  • Each school day begins with prayer and recitation of the school’s Mission Statement

  • Each class begins with a prayer or moment of spiritual reflection

  • School Masses are held weekly (grades 1-8) and monthly (PK-8).  All students are required to attend and participate in school Masses

  • Students in 2nd grade receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion

  • During the school year, various religious programs including class Masses, Christmas Program, Stations of the Cross, Respect Life Presentations, Teaching, Touching Safety and special guest speakers from the community may supplement the Theology Program

Literacy

Students in grades 6-8 utilize the Collections series to read and analyze texts, determine evidence, reason critically and communicate effectively.

Writing

The Journeys Reading Program promotes the cultivation of a vivid vocabulary, grasping spelling and grammar, demonstration of research and writing skills and sharpens listening and speaking skills within our Kindergarten-5th grade students.

Mathematics

Our Kindergarten through 5th grade math program, My Math, incorporates the three components of math rigor-conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application in order to enable the students to progress toward a higher level of academic achievement and steadily grow their math confidence.

Our math program in grades 5-8, Glencoe Math, use the same components of rigor listed above. We also incorporate instruction in Pre-Algebra and Algebra I to students who have demonstrated mastery of the foundational math skills.

Science

Our science program, Science Fusion, inspires investigative and scientific thinking, builds STEM and 21st-Century skills, advances nonfiction and science literacy skills, while using multimodal tools to elevate learning for all. Kindergarten through fifth grade is an overview of the different branches of science. Sixth grade focuses on earth and space science, seventh grade does an in-depth study of life science, and eighth grade analyzes physical science.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies curriculum incorporates the use of Harcourt Social Studies to progress from learning about communities, colonization, and Florida history to states and regions in grades K-5.

Our students in grades 6-8 use the Holt McDougal program as they learn about World History, Geography, Civics, and American History.

Physical Education

Our goal in physical education is for everyone to learn to make healthy choices and feel successful when participating in a variety of activities. Students will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy PE. They will also be encouraged to participate to the best of their ability in a wide variety of activities. Certain skills are taught so that students will be able to pursue competitive sports as well as lifetime sports.

Music

The purpose of our class is to provide each student with an opportunity to explore their creativity while they learn about music and music making. From learning about the way music is notated, and how we read it, to all the different instrument families and the sounds they all make. Each and every student has the chance to get hands on experience with the instruments we have in the classroom. We sing almost every day and work on our songs for School Mass as they change throughout the year. Each student can leave this class with an appreciation for all types of music and how they are made.

St Bartholomew's Art class is filled with projects that boost critical thinking, creativity, and develop communication skills through writing and talking about art. Cross curricular activities link subjects such as social studies, math, science, and language arts as we study vocabulary, art history, and famous artists. Students complete creative projects with various mediums, in varying artistic styles and movements.

This is done by songs, repetition, and demonstrations. Students are able to develop new skills and concepts that will help them further in their understanding of the Spanish language.
